All spiritual practices make us aware of our wandering mind. For me this awareness that I have absolutely no control over the mind came in a 10 day Vipassana meditation camp. Sitting still for hours and hours trying to watch my natural breath; my mind had planned out my new wardrobe, the garden I would have when I had my own land, etc. Try this simple test - sit still for five minutes with your complete attention on the incoming and outgoing breath. Even if the body complies, the mind will not; in five minutes you would possibly have taken a world tour and returned!
The mind is always moving in the past or the future; it does not want to stay in the present moment. The past is gone already and the future has not come yet, life is taking place now; in this present moment. This moment is so precious. It requires so much awareness and consciousness to stay with this moment. Each present moment that I was consciously aware of was a wonderful and peaceful. In 10 days I must have had conscious awareness of maybe one or two minutes! However, these moments bring lots of clarity and awareness and are life-changing.
