Description:
S N Goenka, the founder of Vipassana in India, puts Good and Evil in very simple terms. A good action is one which is good for others and good for you. A sinful action is one which is harmful for others and harmful for you. He further goes on to say that before any good action is performed, feelings of compassion and goodwill are created in you. Similarly before we can harm someone else, we first create harmful and impure feelings such as anger, hatred, ill will, animosity, jealousy, etc. within us.

Yogis realized that the purer they were the more peaceful and happy they felt. They suggested consciously cultivating the right kind of feelings as a way of studying the mind and becoming aware of negative thoughts and feelings…

Maitri – Friendliness towards all beings.

Karuna /Compassion – Empathy means putting yourself into the other person’s shoes. It also means taking action to make the situation favorable for the other person.

Mudita / Goodwill – Being happy for some else’s success, happiness or good qualities.

Upeksha / Benevolent Indifference – Upeksha is a quality of being able to overlook the bad in people or situations. It is not passive acceptance of a wrongful situation, but actively doing what you can to improve it and then being able to not be affected by it.
