"I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened" Mark Twain
Worrying is an obsession with past or future events. We are all guilty of it and at times, worry can create emotional stress.
It is a destructive kind of thinking that makes you feel as if you were reliving the past or future, and you cannot prevent those thoughts from happening.
To help demonstrate the benefits of being worry-free I have a challenge for you to undertake to help eliminate worry as much as possible.
The Challenge
I challenge you to allow yourself to be worry-free for a month.
Firstly, I want you to:
Relax;
Keep calm - even when things get stressful;
Start to be more "present";
Reduce any anxiety you might have;
and most importantly to record the results you find from having a worry free month.
"If you can't sleep, then get up and do something instead of lying there worrying. It's the worry that gets you, not the lack of sleep" Dale Carnegie
It is often said that worrying serves no purpose whatsover; worry is negative goal setting; life goes on whether you are worrying or not and worrying is a waste of precious brain power. All these things are true and I want you to prove this to yourself by conducting this challenge for 30 days.
Start right now, I now challenge you to give yourself some evidence that not worrying helps make life easier for you.
Being worry-free doesn't mean you won't still have to cope with every day life – the school run, numerous demands at work, difficult relationships, bills and all the other things that life throws at you. However, your objective now is to take responsibility for every reaction to give to any difficulty or stress that comes your way. Your responses are to be as positive as possible and you must not worry!
Here are a variety of ways to help you be free from worry:
Take ten slow deep breaths.
Gradually start to be more aware of your environment.
Stop and look at the beauty of something within your sight – the blueness and the vastness of the sky, the greenness of the grass, children playing, raindrops.
Every time you find yourself worrying, get solution focussed and brainstorm as many solutions as you can think of and then write a list of actions you could take immediately to alleviate your perceived problem and then refuse to consider it any further.
Listen to music you find relaxing.
Let the people around you know you are going to be abolish your worrying ways - so they can point out any negative behaviour.
Some great questions to ask yourself when you start worrying is “Why am I thinking about this?” and “What do I expect to accomplish by thinking about this?” "Will this matter to me in a year's time?", "Will this even matter tomorrow?" or even in a few moments with some worries. I've tried these techniques and they really does help you to keep you worry-free.
Good luck with this challenge, keep a daily journal of the results (you should see improvements to your mood, you'll begin to find it easier to turn negative thinking into positive and your action lists for the solutions will be quicker to write once you get into it!).
I'd love to hear your results so e-mail me with them: Sophie@HappyYouCoaching.co.uk
